Personal style they say is always evolving, it changes with time and circumstances, you pick and drop some along the way. This applies to everyone and myself inclusive. One thing that has stuck with me through the years is my love for neutral colors, I always gravitate towards them no matter what. I remember when I started blogging, the craze was colors for black girls, I experimented with colors for a bit, believe me, it was not really my thing so that died too and I discovered patterns  and prints work better, but still my neutrals felt best .

I got the most amazing compliment from a reader accompanied with a few questions too.  Harrie, I love how you play with neutral colors and make it work and look sophisticated on black skin. How do you plan your outfits and what advice will you give a fashionista on a budget?

To answer the first part of the question? I will start by saying all the looks on my blog are outfits I wore going about my daily activities, sometimes I dress up or down depending on the occasion. I don’t just dress up for my blog photos,( nothing against those who do) so I rarely ever plan outfits before time. I just throw them on and rush out the door.

On to the second part of the question, I will say Im a fashionista on a budget too.. For the longest of time I would buy things on impulse and never ever get to wear them, lost a lot of money that way and ended up giving  clothes away, both the expensive and not so expensive ones ,crazy I know. Well lets say I got a lil more responsible and checked my spending habits. So what do I do differently you ask?

I buy solid investment pieces that I could style and wear year round and in many different ways. The white tee, white button down, little black dress, converse, dressy flats , black denim, etc I cut corners with these basic pieces by checking out my fave stores Zara, H&M, Forever 21 and more.

Rotate your pieces and give them new life.  I d wear my white tee with shorts or jeans in the summer and in the Fall, I would layer the same tee to suit the weather thus giving it a whole new look. An example is the LBD on this post, I layered on my fave coat and converse to give it a whole new look and life.

Bargain bargain bargain. Fashionista on a budget, bargain is your friend. Find bargains on investment pieces. I normally check on ebay for bargain pieces and end up with the most amazing finds at great prices too.

Buy your investment pieces in Neutral colors, black, white, grey and camel. This is one of my most priced lesson I learned earlier on this journey of fashion and style. Invest in pieces that never go out style and get them in neutral colors, that way you can pair them with almost everything in your closet, they look new every time plus they look even more expensive in neutrals too. So its a win win

Don’t buy something if you can’t see yourself wearing it immediately. You won’t believe how much I have saved by just trying to put this to practice. I was   am one fashionista who would find something I love but not necessarily wanting to wear it immediately, so I ´d buy for future use. While I scooped some wonderful pieces along the way , I lost money and my closet overflew with clothes I didn’t need.. So my advise to a fashionista on a budget, get a small functional closet, you do not need everything out there to look good, invest in key pieces and be a smart shopper. The fact that its on sale doesn’t make it a great deal or something you really need.

Have any tips to share with us fashionistas on a budget? please drop a comment. I love hearing from you all..  Have a happy new week guys and check back soon.

Converse have been haunting me, hubby has 5 pairs I mean how many can one person have/need? That’s it, I’m now an official convert. Thanks for this Harrie….I’ve tried unsuccessfully many times to invest in a little black dress…..I guess coz I’m so dark im RARELY drawn to the colour 🙁
That said I got none for a wedding i went to once by hubs and it’s amazing how many times since I’ve worn that dress…….love the look (didn’t take off the jacket? 🙂 )
