Lessons in Femininity from ´ How to Marry a Millionaire´‘

For the third time, I watched How to Marry a Millionaire starring Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable. Pola, Schatze, and Loco (respectively) use their wit, sass, and feminine allure lure wealthy bachelors, and ultimately to marry a millionaire

There are several lessons embedded in the movie, most of which I garnered are about style and positioning. However, How to Marry a Millionaire also permeates lessons in femininity.

  • Be Charming. If a man offers to carry your bags, let him. If he offers to open the door, let him. If he offers a gift from a place of good intention, then graciously and humbly accept. Pola, Loco, and Schatze all cultivated a certain charm that possessed a sway over men. They spoke calmly, and they offered their entire attention to their guests. Their charm and hospitality was inviting, persuasive, and influential. More importantly, they used their charm and feminine allure to attract what they considered the very best of men.

Be the Standard. These women set standards, and they knew that in order to be found by the high society men who met their standards, they themselves had to qualify. They had to be what they wanted to attract. They represented the elegance, wealth, and poise that attracted the millionaire men. They looked the part, they dressed the part, and they mirrored the type of men they wanted, except they lacked the funds. However, this was insignificant as the men seemed to favor beauty, companionship, and feminine flare over financial compatibility

  • Dress to Kill. How a lady dresss says something about her, and part of her feminine allure is dressing well. The style in How to Marry a Millionaire radiates pure elegance. Costume designer William Travilla styles the women in form-fitting dresses and elegant accessories that demonstrate true artistry. Their style is an expression of their high class taste and attitude. By dressing the opposite of the men, the women exude femininity. Rather than wearing dark and neutral colors that we typically see in men’s wardrobe, the women wore pretty pinks, wonderful whites, and gracious greens. This brings out the contrast and distinguishes us ladies from the men.
  • Have you seen the movie? Which do you think is more important, millionaire status or the millionaire mindset? Leave comment and add to the discussion.
